My Students
I teach elementary students ELLs (English Language Learners) in an urban community where they have so much joy in learning and constantly experiencing life as they know it. ELLs must overcome many challenges, including limited schooling, trauma, and poverty. Some ELLs come from countries where education is not mandated.
There are ELLs that travel and are constantly moving from one school to another.
There are also ELLs who may attend school in their native country, but the quality of education is less than the U.S. I am also a middle school cheerleading coach.
My Project
I recently had the opportunity to go to an Academy in Atlanta, and I had an incredible experience. The students AND teachers there were energized, excited, and loving what they were doing. Instantly, the wheels in my head began turning-- planning how I could make my classroom more like an RCA class.
One thing I loved was the incorporation of music.
Students who needed extra help with focus got to play the drum to keep up with the "pulse" of the class; I am requesting a drum for my class for this reason. With that in mind, I'm also requesting a disco ball strobe light to help my class celebrate an awesome day or accomplishment.
I'm requesting a document camera to help improve interaction and to help us look more carefully at our writing. I am requesting a PowerPoint clicker so I can move more freely around the room while using PowerPoints, and I'm requesting a laser pointer for students to help with our class discussions. I am also requesting books written by Ron Clark. These books will be added to our classroom library.
