I have the privilege of working with over 600 students and 30 teachers in grades K-5 each week. As the Innovative Learning Coach, I will work with a variety of grade levels each day, with different likes and dislikes, a range of abilities, and all of which are excited about the opportunities and activities I can provide them.
They are inquisitive and curious, hardworking and determined.
A high percentage of our students are English Language Learners, but there's always a classmate (or ten) who is willing to jump in and help out when one doesn't understand or needs some guidance. Some even try to learn a few words in their peer's language in order to communicate with each other.
My Project
As the Innovative Learning Coach, I work with all students in grades K-5 whether they are working on grade level, above or below grade level, have just moved here from another country, or receive Special Education services. Our younger students are often learning about their feelings and how to handle them, or the different range of their feelings. What I LOVE about the Sphero Mini and app is that there is an option to "drive" the robot using your face (smile, frown, head tilt, etc).
Our littlest learners, or those struggling the most with identifying and understanding emotions will find some fun as they explore different emotions, appropriate responses, and facial expressions as they drive the Sphero Mini around the room.
Students can be given a scenario and determine what the person might be feeling, and create a picture coding sequence that they will then use to move the Sphero Mini.
Of course, the mini can also be, driven in many other ways--including using block coding to move the Sphero Mini--perhaps through a maze they've designed and built, or to act as a pollinator and travel from object to object--maybe even use students' knowledge of angles and geometry to code the robotic sphere to create a square, triangle or other shape, or travel a specific distance. The integration of robots like the Sphero Mini doesn't just provide our learners with a fun experience with computer science exposure, it allows them to take their understanding and apply it in a totally different way!
