My students come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds with over 80% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our ESL population is high for our area. Many students speak another language at home or here at school - Spanish, Arabic, French, various African dialects, etc. As diverse as they are in their backgrounds, our students are also diverse in their learning. Our students range from being many grades below grade level to high achievers in the Spectrum and Algebra programs. We are a growth school. This means that our students may not achieve highly on standardized tests, but we "grow" our students and fill in the gaps they have. Our school is student-centered and family-minded.
We advocate for our students.
They come first. Always.
My Project
After attending a professional development using these products, I realized that my students would not only benefit from skill building but also have a great time in math class! Box cars and one-eyed jacks allow students to be active, move around the room, and have fun...all while learning and practicing math.
What student doesn't want to have fun while at school?
I can differentiate the games by adding and removing dice or cards from student to student. The students will gain more confidence in their abilities if they are able to actually "touch and create the math." These games also promote problem solving, critical thinking, and productive struggle.
