Fifth grade is an exciting year that allows students to grow and become more independent in their learning. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and all come together to create our perfect little classroom family. This year is extra exciting since our classroom family had the opportunity to stay together for another school year!
Our classroom is a positive and student centered learning environment.
We have it all in one general ed room- autism, visual impairments, gifted learners, learning disabilities, foster students, emotions, reading deficits, ADHD... but we do not let it define us.
Creating a true classroom community encourages students to take control of their learning, creating lifelong learners.
My Project
Flexible seating options allow students to make choices in the classroom. They are able to decide what type of learning environment fits them best. Having a variety of seating options involves them in the classroom decision making process, fostering skills of independence and good choices regarding learning. They will feel safe to take risks and improve their skills in all subject areas, both academically and socially. Flexible seating helps foster a classroom community of learners who work together toward success.
Not only will this decision making impact their fifth grade year of learning, but it also sets the stage for the remainder of their educational career and beyond.
Good decisions lead to a positive life, in every way possible.
Our project includes rolling desk chairs for movement while seated and working on classroom assignments. These can easily be moved from location to location to assist in creating a space built on discussion within groups and sharing new ideas between learners. Since these seats are not your typical chairs, they introduce movement to help my ADHD students maintain focus on learning. Each of these items will benefit students during the learning process through the creation of a creative, welcoming and collaborative educational experience.
