Help me give my students pipe insulation and duct tape for roller coasters.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Most of my students come from a low-socioeconomic household. Many of them face stressors at home that affect their performance at school. I work hard to make my classroom a safe and nurturing space where students are free to be themselves and take academic risks. I love the Interactive Science Notebooks because they allow students to take those risks, by showing off their ability to write, draw, or make amazing graphs! By having a classroom stocked with colored pencils, glue sticks, and colored paper (to name a few) my students have the tools to express themselves in a way that encourages academic achievement.
My physical science students spend two weeks designing, building, and rebuilding roller coasters. Through this experience they increase their understanding of Newton's Laws and show me how much they have learned. They enjoy the hands-on nature of the activity, and I am always blown away by the creativity and depth of understanding they gain through this project.
The pipe insulation will be cut in half lengthwise, so the students can see the marble as it races down the track.
Because it is an open track, loop-da-loops are visible and exciting for the students to watch. In addition to physics, the students are given a budget they need to stay under. They are given $1,000,000. Each 1 meter piece of tape is $50,000 and every piece of track is $100,000. They need to think ahead, design and plan and then build their structure.
