My students come to me from all walks of life, with all kinds of backgrounds. Being at a Native American boarding school means that they each have experienced life in different ways, and often those experiences come with them into the classroom. This provides us with different barriers every day. If you were to peek into my classroom at any point of the day, you could see up to sixteen busy bodies working hard on the task at hand! We are generally spread throughout the room and try to get as much movement in our day as possible!
As first and second graders, being away from home for several months at a time can be very tough.
I have worked hard to establish a loving community in my classroom where we all support each other and learn from each other. We may not have the finest books, technology, and other materials that some other schools have, but we certainly have a loving environment where the students are ready to learn!
My Project
I have asked for an assortment of dice so that I can help students learn to count higher than five, add two or more numbers together, and subitize numbers (look at a set of dots and 'just know' how many are there). I have also asked for a few games to help with our counting/adding skills. Finally, I asked for several different forms of storage to help keep us organized as we use all these supplies.
Counting is a basic math skill that many first grade students struggle with.
If I cannot provide them with adequate experience and exposure, I am setting them up for failure as they move on to higher level math. I firmly believe in having a solid grasp on number sense before pushing on and making them memorize facts. These dice and number games will help keep children engaged, while allowing them to learn at their own pace.
