My students are pioneers, part of the founding classes for a former middle school that is now kindergarten through eighth grade. They come to school each day ready to exercise their brains and expand their knowledge. While many have circumstances outside of school that make this a challenge, they do not give up!
Many of my students are English Language Learners, and one hundred percent are students of color.
Many, if not all, receive free breakfast and lunch. I have extremely high expectations for my students, and fifty percent end first grade reading at the end of second grade or beginning of third grade benchmark levels. My former students have gone on to outperform the district on grade two ANET testing.
My Project
These math tools will allow students to independently use the math strategy that works best for their way of thinking. While I teach all of the strategies and require that students try them out, they ultimately need to use the tools and methods that work for their personal learning style. This includes: 120 charts, number lines, ten frames, and math manipulatives.
The Common Core Standards significantly stress number sense and the flexibility to approach numbers with intention.
These tools will assist my students to do just that! Over half of my class are ELLs (English Language Learners), so having hands-on, visual tools is essential to their success.
