My Students

My amazing students attend a small, rural high school that is working hard to maintain high standards and resources with few funds. We call it "being scrappy" and making the most out of what we have.

My students are hunters, farmers, athletes, musicians, and artists, but they are not really writers or readers, for the most part.

As a school, we have been working to change that dynamic through high-interest reading selections and daily writing, revision, and editing. I am seeing an incredible improvement in my students!

My Project

Metaphor Dice were designed by American poet Taylor Mali as a creative way to enhance figurative language. I am focusing on increasing my students' writing abilities, and I know that they will love this tool.

Metaphor Dice will help them find their poetic voices that many of them do not know they have.

Students tend to shy away from sensory images and other types of figurative language in their writing. They think that it sounds goofy, but what they need to realize is that they are ALL writers; some just need more help finding their style and voice. Metaphor Dice will give them a boost!
