We are a school with a Mandarin immersion program. My class is consists of 24 kindergarteners (age 5) who spend 80% of their school time learning in Mandarin and 20% in English. More than half of my students come from a non-Chinese speaking background. They are doing a great job learning the target language through various subject areas, such as science, PE, social studies, and math.
No kids will ever be inspired by worksheets with mechanical drills.
I believe that children learn the best through hands-on experience. In my class I design activities that allow kindergarteners to touch, feel, and manipulate objects. I am a big fan of team work activities because young children need a lot of practice on negotiating and coming up with an agreement. My goals are to have my students become creative problem solvers and good team players.
My Project
Kindergarten is the year that young readers take off and grow so much in reading. My kindergarteners are so ready to dive into books!
I believe young readers thrive when they get to choose the books that pique their interest.
During our reader's workshop time, instead of assigning books for each student, I want to give them freedom to choose the books that they will be reading.
With our limited classroom space, a book cart with wheels is a perfect choice. I can roll the books to each group for them to choose their reading materials. Currently I lay out all books in boxes and lay them out on a big table. It creates some problems as they shop in groups. The labels are not very clear so the students do always find their level books easily. My hope is that book shopping time can be a smoother experience and saves some time so that students can have more time to read.
