My students need a reading rug to go to whenever they are reading to self or with a partner. This rug is large enough to accomodate my 6 and 7 year olds.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school located in a rural section of the foothills of North Carolina. We have a low socio-economic and transient population. We have a very high percentage of children who receive free and reduced lunch.

My students come to me with little but they give their all.

They are very diverse and energetic. For many, my classroom and our school are where their basic needs are being met. We are like a family.

My first graders love to listen to stories and are excited about reading on their own. One of their favorite things to do during our Daily 5 time is Read to Self or Read to Someone.

My Project

Having a "reading rug" in my classroom will allow my students the opportunity to have a clean, flexible place to go whenever they want to read. During our Daily 5 time, they often choose Read to Self or Read with Someone.

Students read better whenever they are comfortable.

They will know exactly where to go with their favorite book and will have the space to stretch out and read quietly. They won't have to sit on the cold, hard floor. The rug will also allow for a special group time where all 20 of my students can go to the carpet without being crowded. Students learn best whenever they can move around and have an alternative to sitting at their desks all the time.
