I am a third grade teacher on the Flathead Indian Reservation where we serve the most wonderful children! We have a very unique population in our school district. Many of our children are members and descendants of the Salish and Kootenai tribes, where heritage and culture run deep and strong and our children are our most valued blessing.
Our elementary school serves a high percentage of poverty level students and we are training them at an early age to be great role models for our community and others as they grow up.
When children are raised in an area of high poverty, it takes a community of caring adults, teachers, and mentors to bring hope, joy, and encouragement into learning environments for brighter futures. Our purpose and goal is to help every child learn that they can be and will be a vital part of their community, heritage, and culture by learning how to be successful students and future role models.
My Project
Our school has a fantastic program called Role Model Readers! We believe one of the best ways to encourage children to read is by inviting exciting mentor groups to our school to read with our students. New books are crucial to our program and would be used by children in grades K-4.
Picture our lunchroom filled with dads, moms, grandparents, firefighters, law enforcement officers, high school athletes, honor students, service clubs, and community members mentoring and reading with elementary children!
Twice a month, Role Model Readers hosts breakfast events to bring community and high school members into our school to get our children excited about reading.
We are in dire need of books to keep our program running. Our current collection of books is over 15 years old and they are literally falling apart. This project would infuse new life into our program and put vital reading resources into the hands of our children.
