How can we encourage our 3rd-5th graders to want to read a chapter book? That is the dilemma the librarians in my county face. A beginning step may be the Rockstar Readers Book Competition!
I am the librarian at a small public school which is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina.
My school has 150 students of many diverse and unique backgrounds. Many of my students are reluctant readers and do not currently read at their grade level. I hope having a book club and the opportunity to compete academically will motivate my students to succeed in their reading efforts and seek to be lifelong readers.
My Project
For many of my students, reading is a frustrating challenge. Chapter books can be intimidating and seen as "too long" compared to a picture book. In my school district, several librarians and I have decided to form book clubs to promote reading chapter books. We have selected 6 books (such as the classic Charlotte's Web and Newberry Award winner, The One and Only Ivan) for the club to read and then hold a Rockstar Readers Book Competition, quizzing the students on facts from the selected books. I need several copies of each book so students do not have a lengthy wait to read one of the six selections. We will begin the books clubs in December, so I would like to get these wonderful books ASAP!
Having the latest and best children's literature and the chance to participate in an academic competition will encourage my students to develop a love of reading to last a lifetime.
With your help, my student will be ready and eager to reach their reading goals!
