My Students
Rocks make the world go round and holds the seesaw so it won't fall down!! So, what about giving rocks the attention they deserve. I tell my 4th-8th graders that we will be trampling on rocks for the rest of our lives. My students should be using all the scientific inquiries for understanding rocks.
My curious and energetic students make up the unique culture of Louisiana.
Though most are inhabitants of high poverty neighborhoods they continue to thrive on their curiosity and their strong thirst for learning about their environment. Our school is in the center of the community and continues to be the landmark for where students are given the opportunity to learn. In science they are learning that they are not alone. Other worlds matter and exist around them. I want them to grasp the concepts of science so that they can understand their role on Earth, as human beings. But first, we must surround them with the best opportunity to learn how we should relate to our mother earth. In science, my students show that they love to learn and manipulate resources that give them more information about their world. The Rock Cycle will show the many phases of the earth and how each part of the cycle came to be.
My Project
My collection of rocks will give my students first hand knowledge of changes in the Earth over time. They will be able to use their senses to explore rocks. Then, the selected resources will help my students understand changes to the Earth's surface and what caused them, providing the logic for the rock's appearance. They will be able to identify surfaces they see in their everyday environment and classify them according to the rock cycle. In the classroom, students will model landforms and discover what makes them different. With these resources, student will explore the forces that shape our shoreline, what is taken away and what is left. Most of all, these resources will teach them how they should help in saving the environment to protect their future and the future of mankind. We will perform numerous experiments to understand the geological process, how rocks are created, eroded, and deposited.
