My students need rainbow colored equipment and floor spots to get them excited, organized, and MOVING so we maximize our time in moderate to vigorous activity levels with an emphasis on FUN!
I teach health and physical education in a large STEAM middle school, encompassing a variety of socioeconomic levels in a diverse community in Upstate South Carolina. My sixth graders are awesome- they are enthusiastic and brave when given a new physical challenge and do not shy away from the task.
However, as my sixth graders mature, competing influences like hormonal changes, shifting peer influences, and their increasing engagement with electronic devices quell enthusiasm in physical activity- especially in my girls.
Since their attention and interests shift elsewhere, I am reaching out for your help in re-engaging my reluctant students and combating the trend towards childhood obesity. Adult habits are many times established during the middle school years- your assistance will help make those healthy habits!
My Project
My favorite professional development session from this summer focused on student engagement utilizing game theory. Games that I participated in during this seminar incorporated aspects of traditional games' skills and today's video games, (levels, point systems, etc.). This was accomplished with the addition of rainbow color-coded equipment such as light-weight balls and floor marker dots.
I'd love to implement these ideas and acquire similar equipment to get my classes excited, quickly organized and MOVING, with activity that is relevant and fun for my middle schoolers!
My goal is to create games that allow for a high percentage of our time to be moderate to vigorous activity while students practice and master strategic thinking along with technique and skills.
Moving to this innovative approach will improve my students' engagement, excitement, confidence and cardiovascular fitness. This grant will help our entire school get excited and GET MOVING as they practice skills using a strategic, fun, team-oriented format.
