Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At Maxwell Elementary, students recite and embody the following message: "Read, Baby, Read! The more you read, the more you know! The more you know, the more you grow. Knowledge is freedom. Freedom is power, and I WANT IT!" Our students know they are on their own unique path to success!
Students in my special education classroom have diverse needs.
I work with students from kindergarten through 5th grade with a range of mild to moderate disabilities. Despite the wide variety in my room they all have one thing in common - they need to move!
We are located in urban Denver, Colorado. A high percentage of our student population comes from low-income families with 95% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. Over half of our students are learning English as their second language. The special education students I work with are weighted with the additional impact of significant learning and social-emotional challenges. Despite all of these challenges, my students are eager and motivated to learn.
My Project
Some students need more movement than others. For students with a sensory processing disorder, Autism, or ADHD, being in motion allows their brains to be engaged. That's where rocking stools, such as the Hokki Stools, come in. The instability of the stools requires students to instinctively and continually engage their core muscles. Constant movement is required in order to stay seated on the stool. That movement, however slight, increases focus.
Students in my classroom struggle across content areas academically, as well as socially and emotionally. Because of these struggles, it is imperative that their work time with me is as focused and productive as possible. Hokki Stools will allow these students to tap into their greatest potential as future contributors to their community.
Students in my classroom are not just learners.
They are movers and shakers, too! Unfortunately for many students, the continuous need to move can inhibit their ability to participate and learn to their full potential.
The use of Hokki Sensory Stools will help my students engage their minds fully while at school without the encumbrance of their hyperactivity or sensory processing disorders.
