Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a very special group of students. They are all talented and excited when it comes to learning new things. We begin our day every day with this mantra: I am strong. I am smart. We are all equal. They say each line together as a class and enjoy this time of the day. I want each of them to have faith in themselves and see themselves as I do. Each one is special and has so much to offer the world.
Our school is a Title I school with over 80% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.
We also have a large ELL population and many migrant families. The children from migrant families spend most of the year split between multiple schools, causing a disruption in their education for which I must try to make up while they are with me. Although my students come with these obstacles in their paths, they are able to enjoy learning and remind me of the joys as well.
My Project
Help me give my students the opportunity to gain confidence in themselves and in their abilities. We will be using the BBC Micro:bits, the Yahboom Robot Kit for Microbit STEM Education, and the Yahboom Robot Kit for Micro:bit to Learn Programming STEM Education Car for Kids during our Computer Science centers. We will use the batteries to power the Robot kits and the laptops to program the BBC Micro:bits. The Snap Circuits will teach my students how to build exciting projects such as AM radios, burglar alarms, doorbells, and much more!
Computer Science has opened up a whole new world to my students!
Many times I have seen my students get frustrated in their core subjects and the standard curriculum but when I introduced the BBC micro:bits and coding to them they came alive! Using these to help integrate math, reading, and science into our current curriculum has helped give them a new love for learning. By utilizing the hands-on materials it allows them to better understand the concepts being introduced in their texts.
