My students need fun and exciting chapter books to keep them engaged in reading. Most of my students are unable to purchase books on their own, and love the idea of having their very own book!
As a teacher in a low-income, Title I school, I see that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are spunky, independent, and love to learn!
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". My schools focus is “College for certain”. Here we focus on academic language, growth mindset, and learning in multiple, meaningful ways. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me.
I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic success.
We are incorporating novel studies into our daily learning. Novel studies help to share new cultures, historical time periods, or just an understanding of life circumstances outside their own, a good novel study can be the key to opening the door to understanding. Embedding a novel study into our daily reading curriculum will help to teach our students how to cooperate, take turns, and have engaged in peer discussions. Students will be able to work on their listening and speaking skills, both listening and reading comprehension throughout this novel study using collaborative conversations, answering questions and reading with peers and independently.
