Rocking Readers: A Class Library To Promote Reading
My students need a classroom library so that they can read independently at their level. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to read at home.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every child in the United States of America deserves to have the opportunity to learn how to be a successful reader. In order to do this, students need to practice! In my classroom, I have 25 students and they are reading at different levels. A library would enable them to practice their reading.
I teach at an urban performing arts school in Michigan.
Ninety percent of students at my school receive free and reduced lunch. Many of my students do not have books and/or Internet access at home. This means that their exposure to literacy is very limited. My school does not provide their students with an adequate library. Books are not organized and can not be checked out. Resources are limited and my students need more reading practice. The children are very eager readers and love books! They would be very excited to have a classroom library. As a teacher, it is my job to get students excited about reading. A classroom library would be a great tool to have!
My Project
A classroom library would allow me to set out books that my students could read independently. This daily practice will help my students read at or above grade level. I would also be able to have my students write about what they have read. This means that my library would improve my class' reading and writing skills. I would also be able to work closely with my students to improve their comprehension skills. MEAP reading scores are very low at my school. This library would help my students improve their scores and become life long readers in the process.
My school is in an area where one out of five adults are illiterate.
This statistic needs to change! In a global economy, education is essential! My students grow up in homes were reading is simply not modeled very often. For many children, school is the only place they will be able to pick out and read books. That is why my students would benefit so much from a classroom library!
