How can a child learn about rocks and minerals if they don't have have access to the real thing? My students are learners that must see it and touch it to fully understand the concept.
I'm a fourth grade inclusion teacher at a small elementary school in North Carolina.
My class has twenty-seven students, 18 boys and 9 girls. Many of my students are from military families and come from all over the country. In my classroom, I currently have 5 students with learning and speech disabilities, along with many students on or at grade level.
My Project
My students are enthusiastic learners who want to do more than just read about it. They want to analyze, explore, and apply their new knowledge through hands-on experiments.
After a few lessons on minerals, it would be wonderful for my students to perform a mineral test with real samples. I would also like for my students to be able to identify the difference in the three rock types and gain a better understanding of the uses of rocks and minerals in our everyday life. I want them to learn that we use them to build buildings, decorate our homes, enrich our food, and much much more.
Right now, my classroom has a handful of rocks and minerals, which have seen their better days! Last year, I invested in several rock and mineral books and my students labeled the samples we had.
This year I would add some much needed samples to our collection, which would be used for many hands-on learning activities.
Your donations will make a difference in the life of many fourth grades students for years to come!
What better way to ignite the scientist in a young person's life...than to give them the necessary supplies.
Thanks in advance for helping me to open their eyes to the world around us.
