This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Learning to read is hard work! My students are doing their best and working hard each day to become proficient readers, but many of my students do not get the opportunity to hear a fluent reader read a story outside of the books I read to them in class.
My students are a sweet group of first graders from a low income area.
Most have parents who are busy working in the evening and who do not have time to sit and read with their children. My students are learning to love books and all the different places they can visit in a book. One of their favorite times of the day is right before we pack up when we have a read aloud. You would think eighteen first graders would be jumping up and down getting excited to go at the end of the day, but they are not. They sit riveted as I read aloud to them and often sigh when the announcements come on.
My Project
I am asking for books on cd and big books for the classroom. The books on cd will allow the students to follow along with a story during reading time, increasing their fluency and word recognition. The big books will allow me to do shared readings with the class, where we read together. Also big books will allow students to partner read together without fighting over who holds the book.
Being able to read is one of the most important life skills a teacher can give her students.
The materials I am asking for will help my students gain the foundational reading skills they need to become great readers.
