Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a very diverse community. Some of the students are the first in their families to learn English and are usually the translator for their parents. The students want to learn. In class they enjoy using our class netbooks and for some, this is their only time on a computer all day. My class strives to do better at something every day. Not all of my students are working at grade level, but they do learn something new everyday. My class loves working on hands on activities. They love working together and really enjoy being able to read. Our school is truly a learning community where students and teachers work together to learn and explore. Our classroom is a gateway to learning but it is driven by the students. My class loves to explore and learn new activities and facts. They use technology as an amazing resource to learn.
My Project
The 2 Sphero and 2 Ollie robots will allow my students to program and control robots in class. The students will work on coding and sequencing as they problem solve using the robots. The students will work on collaboration and communication skills as they work through activities that require them to problem solve using coding, sequencing and robotics. Students will learn how to create step by step instructions for the robots to navigate obstacles and courses.
The skills learned through coding can be transferred to many other subject areas.
As student learn how to code their robots, they will be learning how sequence and proper order can make a difference in the outcome. The students will work on creating complex, multi step instructions for the robots. This will teach them how to create sequence and order. This can be transferred to understand how a story progresses since one action leads to another.
These robots will allow students to practice mathematics in an applied situations. They must be able to determine shapes and angles when programming the robot path. Sequence and order can also be explored though using the robots. Coding and robotics lead to a vast number of other subject understandings.
