Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Special Education Teacher at a Title 1 elementary school in Nevada. I teach Kindergarten - 5th grade students who are eligible for Special Education services under the classifications of Learning Disability, Emotional Disturbance, Hearing Impairment, Autism, and/or Mental Retardation.
As a Special Education teacher, I have the opportunity to teach and accommodate to the needs of a number of different types of learners: Visual learners, auditory learners, and kinesthetic learners.
For my students, reading is as daunting as it is challenging. In fact, my students often seem to be AFRAID to read. My students need to be given the freedom to break out of their desks and read in a comfortable, welcoming environment. Rather than fearing the task of reading, my students need to be given the opportunity to learn the excitement and enjoyment that can result from the act of reading.
The reading carpet is interactive in that games can be developed to incorporate the different letters and letter sounds. Additionally, just by sitting on the carpet, basic literacy skills will be reinforced. Other than being used during read alouds, the rocking chair will give students a place where they can read independently as rewards for independent reading.
Thriving in environments where a variety of learning modalities are utilized, my students need to write, draw, act lessons out, move items around, and watch concepts develop. My students must ENGAGE in the materials that they are learning about. What better way to engage a student in their material than to make them a part of it?!
