What's that sound coming down the hall? That's the sound of students creating music!
My students are very energetic and creative.
I have found teaching my students a beginning band instrument in fourth grade covers most of what they need to learn in music class. The recorder gets students hands-on with learning how to hold a wind instrument and make that joyful sound you might remember from your elementary school days.
The school is in a high poverty area. There is 90% free lunch. This is a Title I school as well. Many students are responsible for other siblings or cousins when they are at home. I want them to be able to immerse themselves in creating music when they come through that music room door and leave their trouble behind them.
My Project
My students will be learning to play the recorders through a curriculum called Recorder Karate. Every song teaches different skills. When the skill is correctly performed the students receive a small "karate belt" to go around their recorder. The beauty of this program is the students can all learn at their own pace.
The recorders I am asking for will be for the students to not only learn with, but for the students to keep.
Many students cannot afford another expense. These recorders will make this program possible. The Lyons recorders are fun colors for the kids. They get so excited when they get to take them home and play for their families.
