Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Literacy centers are a big part of our day. Students get to interact with each other and manipulatives to expand their reading skills.
I have 24 enthusiastic Kindergartners.
They are enthusiastic for reading. They are constantly ambitious and eager to learn more about how to be a good reader. We are an low economic urban school with a high population of English Language Learners. We have 12 languages spoken in our school.
My Project
One thing that my children are great at is telling stories. Our retelling center is their favorite. Unfortunately, we do not have enough puppets for the amount of books we read aloud during the week. We need enough big books, puppets, and magnetic letters for 2 books a week for the entire year. The students work in groups to retell the stories during center time. Not only will these puppets help my classroom, but they will help my partners in Kindergarten, since we have to share materials.
When students use big books and real-life puppets instead of paper copies, they have more enjoyment out of it.
With paper cut outs they quickly get bored and the materials do no last as long. Retelling is a basic literacy skill that students really start to embrace in Kindergarten. Let's keep this passion alive and energetic for years to come.
