My students need a class set of “Stick Stations” that will help us learn to read music, give us practice playing together in a group, and allow us to have fun jammin’ and making music!
Our school is made up of students ranging in age from three to eight years old. It is a Title I school, which means that many students come from low income families. My students are diverse in many ways; economically, academically, socially, and emotionally. All students have music twice a week for 30 minutes, where making music through dancing, singing, and playing instruments is the heart of our music program.
I always look forward to every music class because my students are smart, curious, funny, eager, and loving!
When a new class enters the music room, I am always met with smiles and excitement. All of my students love to make and experience music!
My Project
Our K-2 music students will be stuck on music with “KidStix”, an engaging method for teaching music literacy created by world-renown music educator and author Artie Almeida. KidStix kits allow students in each class to practice rhythm patterns with the use of their own personal percussion station.
With Artie’s KidStix curriculum, I will create a class set of “Stick Stations” that will be used to teach the skill of reading music, give practice playing together in a group, and have a whole lot of fun just jammin’ and making music!
Each stick station will be placed in a #10 can (which will be recycled from our cafeteria!) with foam padding on the bottom to protect our ears, a pair of drum sticks, a pop toob, a tambourine, and a cutting board for different timbres allowing for a fun and challenging learning environment.
I learned about KidStix through Artie’s amazing workshops. With all of Artie’s methods, you can expect "heavy academics delivered joyfully". KidStix is no exception. I look forward to using her tried-and-true fun and energetic lessons with my classes using our new Stick Stations!
