My students come from a low income area. We are now 100% free and reduced lunch because of the high level of poverty in our area. So many of the students come to school without the supplies they need. We do the best we can to provide for them with the limits that we have. As the music teacher, I see every student in the school and I see every situation. The only thing that I ask the students to buy in the 6 years they are in my class is a recorder.
Many of the students are not able to afford a recorder, but they are eager to learn and play.
I would love to be able to help the students that cannot afford a recorder get one for class.
My Project
My 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be learning to play recorders in Music. Many of my students cannot afford their own recorder. Students that do not have a recorder use a stick that has the holes drawn on so that they can sing and move their fingers to the correct note. This is the only solution we have as of now, but it does not allow the students to learn how to actually play and perform on the recorder.
Students that cannot afford a recorder will be given a recorder for music.
This way the can experience and learn to play a recorder right along those that can afford their own. I do not want any kids to miss out because they don't have the money. It just isn't fair to them!
We have lots of fun recorder songs and activities that we do throughout the year. One event we participate in is Recorder day. I am able to take up to 20 4th and 5th grade students to perform at another school with other students at an awesome concert. We also have several concerts at school that students have the opportunity to perform at. I want all students to have the opportunity to learn and perform regardless of income status.
