Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a rough neighborhood on Chicago's west side. I want my music program to be a safe place, where my students can master their ability to express their experiences through music. My students are huge rock stars. Every day they become more confident in their abilities and I am so inspired by their growth. I set high expectations for all my students, and I am continuously amazed at their ability to meet and exceed them.
My school is very supportive of my program, but there is very little money for supplies!
Since 99% of our students receive free lunch, I can rarely count on contributions from home. I love teaching at this school, and I rely on grants to fill the gaps so that my students can access the excellent music education that they deserve.
My Project
When I started teaching recorder, I was completely blown away by the enthusiasm of my students. They purchased their own recorders, but I needed to source the cheapest possible recorders and we had tons of issues with instruments breaking. Many of my students still could not afford their own instruments and had to use a recorder out of "the bucket." These recorders have been played by who knows how many students. They were at the school before me!
I want my students to be able to rock on recorder, regardless of whether they can afford their own instrument.
With this project, I will be turning a whole new group of students on to this awesome woodwind instrument. Hopefully my students will never need to use a recorder out of "the bucket" again.
I did such a great job turning my students on to recorder last year, that when one classroom teacher asked me to introduce them to the music of Motown, they were outraged that I was "wasting their time!" Now, I love Motown, but I was very impressed with how seriously my students took their musicianship at such a young age. I can't wait to introduce the next group of performers to this instrument.
