I work in a very large elementary school in a suburban neighborhood in Virginia. Our school has over a thousand students and is growing because of lots of new development being built around the school.
Our school is a "Leader In Me" school.
Our school teaches the Franklin Covey's Seven Habits. My students love to work on "Habit 6- Syngerize" in music class as it takes lots of synergy to create music! My students love to shine as leaders throughout the school, especially in music performances.
The population at my school represents students from many different cultures and economic backgrounds. `
Learning to play a recorder is an important part of the elementary music experience. For my students who will choose to be in band or orchestra, the recorder is a great introduction to both solo and ensemble playing. We will implement a Recorder Karate program where students will earn a rainbow loom band for each song level they master. The rainbow loom bands will coordinate with the karate testing colors. Recorder Karate is a way to encourage students to practice and master the recorder. These recorder belts will be a great motivator for some of my more reluctant players and encouragement for ALL my students. I have even requested some silver and gold bands for those students who pass black belt
and need some more challenging music.
Recorder Karate is the perfect self paced motivation that my students need.
In addition I have requested some new recorder music that will be used on our interactive white board to supplement the recorder songs that we currently use. I have also requested a mailbox system to store recorder music so that students can take their next recorder songs as they progress to the next level.
