We have 427 students enrolled in our elementary school. Our students come from a variety of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, but all share something in common called poverty. I work at a Title I school in Alaska that has more homeless students than any other elementary school in our city. None of the students come with school supplies. We provide the children with free breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack on a daily basis. We also send home bags of food to feed each child breakfast, lunch, and dinner over the weekends.
Asking parents to bring in the simplest school supplies like a box of crayons, or a dozen yellow pencils, is financially impossible for so many of our families.
With school district budget cuts three years in a row, funding has been cut for paper, books, and school supplies. This leaves us classroom teacher to have to go out and buy all of the necessary materials that we need to help these children succeed in school and in life.
My Project
My students love spending time inside books. If this project is funded my students will have the opportunity to explore more magical and engaging texts. All of these materials have been specifically chosen with students interests, needs, and learning styles in mind.
I'm hoping these additions to my classroom library will continue to foster literacy development and growth in my young learners.
Students will be given the freedom of choice. These materials will allow my students to read a wider variety of fiction and non fiction texts at their own level. This project will only continue to aid their life long love of literacy!
