My Students

"Will you read with me?" The child eagerly held out her favorite book. "Not now honey, I'm busy." Unfortunately, this very conversation goes on in many homes throughout the community. With today's busy moms and dads, I want my students to develop a love for reading on their own.

There are 27 eager first graders in our class.

They attend a public charter school with a mission to inspire lifelong learning. Our students are held to a very high standard of 85% mastery for every subject. All of our first graders are required to read 20 minutes independently at home. However, it is difficult for some of our students with busy parents to be motivated to read on their own.

My Project

We want to create fun book bags for each student to take home. Inside the book bags will be an engaging, grade level book with a puppet inside for students to read with. This will both encourage students to read on their own and make reading fun. It will also foster responsibility as students will have to check out and return the book bags.

Reading is such a vital skill for students to learn, and first grade is an optimal time to help students create a love of reading.

Offering students books bags that include puppets and other activities that relate to the story can help stories come to life and spark the imaginations of our young readers.
