My students need flexible seating, fidgets, fluorescent light covers, designated places to move, and noise-canceling headphones to support their growth in mathematics and all other academics.
On Paper: My students are Third and Fourth graders all of which have Individualized Education Plans. In no way, shape, or form does their disability define them. In fact, my students are some of the most unique individuals. The Reality: I chose the following quote because it truly speaks to who my students are. “If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." -Ignacio Estrada My students have shaped the way I teach. I am a flexible, creative, and an on-the-spot teacher because of my students. Lesson plans do not determine what is to be taught each day, my students’ skill sets are.
My Project
"It is impossible to educate the mind without involving the body. Learning is thinking, and movement integrated."
In just 30 minutes my students must make the hike from their classroom to mine, place their belongings in a second desk, read the room, and begin working.
After 5 minutes two of them have remembered they have forgotten something and another two are pleading to go to the bathroom. If I let all of them go, I’ll be left talking to one student. You may or may not have noticed, but that trip to the bathroom was a routine break they scheduled for themselves. I cannot blame my students, we just came from math class, and we’re near the end of the day. They need to move but they also need to feel as though they are in a safe learning environment. Fluorescent lights and loud noises can be distracting but with your support, we will have the supplies we need to focus. When a wobbly stool won't do, my students need to know there are designated places to move like the mat or pop up tent.
Furthermore, we are in dire need of an updated math intervention to support the students outside of their general education classroom. After ten years, it's time for an update. I can dust off the old math intervention, but I wouldn't be doing my students any favors. Instead, it's time for a math makeover.
