Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Normally, our students learn to sing and play small instruments in music class. However, some of our students want to step up the next level of musicianship by taking private lessons after school!
Our elementary school serves a student population that is 95% low-income, 98% minority, 62% English Language Learners, 9% Special Education students and 100% college bound.
School enrollment has grown over time, (and is now at full capacity), due to consistent improvement in school quality and we are now nearing almost 750 students. We are an innovation school, with extended day and extended year. McGlone is a really incredible place – we have shown significant growth in the past four years since turnaround, catapulting ourselves from one of the lowest-performing schools to the 8th in the state for growth. My students are ready for musical opportunities!!
My Project
My students need four quality acoustic guitars in order to take private lessons. Beginning guitar students need quality made instruments that facilitate learning with ease and also provide good sound quality. This will help each student to have the most musical moments possible. Learning an instrument is a skill they will have forever!
Many of our students and their families do not have the resources to provide an instrument along with lessons.
Who knows how many of them could be world class musicians, but never had the chance. We can give them that chance! Music changed my life, kept me out of trouble when I was young and gave me an awesome career as an adult.
