My students need these nonfiction text varieties to fully engage in new, informative topics with a low intimidation level. Scholastic News Magazines and Time for Kids lead students through difficult text in an intriguing and non-threatening way.
I teach in a low-income district of which 80% of our students do not speak English. They are coming from a variety of different countries and do not have the prior knowledge that would help them be successful. My students come from families who also struggle with the language and find it difficult to help their children at home. That said, these 6 and 7-year-olds are resilient, perseverant, and strive to reach their fullest potential. Teaching in the district I am in has increasingly become more difficult, but has also become more rewarding as each year passes.
My Project
This project is important because it will level the playing field for all of my students. By reading these types of texts, my students will have access to a variety of topics that are extremely unfamiliar to them. These texts will aid in building their prior knowledge, vocabulary, and the ability to connect to the world around them.
I will use the Scholastic and Time magazines and books to engage my students in reading, writing, and conversation strategies.
As a group, we will be able to discuss real-world situations, jobs, and places around the world. These texts will become part of their classroom library and texts that they will read and discuss with their learning partners.
