Dr. Seuss wrote, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." When students read, they learn. These ideas and facts become the foundation to help them reach their future goals. Help our students become strong independent readers!
Our school is a title one school in Hawaii.
We have students from a variety of socioeconomic levels and ethnic backgrounds. Our second grade students are fun loving, active, and enjoy learning. They love working on projects, and so we have designed projects around three sets of books.
My Project
Our goal is to help our students become fluent, independent readers. Students who are able to not only read words, but students who can use the information they read. We have designed two research projects that incorporate reading, writing, speaking, and art. Students enjoy the projects, but they have a hard time finding information about the topic that is written at a level they can read. These book sets will solve that problem and help students to complete these projects more independently.
In addition, we want to help students practice fluency through engaging them in Readers Theater. Students will practice reading the lines as if they were a part of a real conversation between characters in the story. This will be a fun change of pace and increase student engagement in working on fluency.
The more things these students know, the more places they'll be able to go.
These projects are fun and engaging, but without books the students can read...our student can't go very far. These book sets will help students develop confidence in their reading. Our students will we be able to research independently, and build the foundation for future learning.
