Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are fifth-graders in an urban school. They represent diverse nationalities, home languages, family structures, interests, and learning styles.
My students are determined to overcome any obstacles they face in life.
The school neighborhood is in an area of high poverty, and more than 80% of the students in the community entered school with a primary language background other than English. However, my students will not let their circumstances label them as disadvantaged learners. They continue to make the best of the opportunities they are presented. As a result, they will finish their elementary school career with determination and resilience!
My Project
Our classroom theme this year has been centered around space, specifically around future exploration of Mars. This theme forms the foundation of STEM integrated literacy instruction. As my students read novels about space, they work on engineering design projects that align with the content of their novels. We've designed spacesuits for potatoes and will design wheels for a Martian rover.
Engineering design projects that involve rocketry would provide an out of this world experience for my students.
Designing, building, and launching rockets would support our classroom studies of chemistry and physics while also engaging students even deeper in the novels they are reading. These materials would provide my students with an introduction to rocketry through the use of human powered, air powered, and water powered rockets. Students would gain experience in maintaining a control while changing variables in their investigations, and eventually students will apply their knowledge of chemistry to their knowledge of rocketry so they can build carbon dioxide powered rockets.
