Our school students are in low income and high population of refugees from all over the world. They are eager to learn and grateful for the opportunity to be in school, but often times their experience with the natural world and academic life are often limited because of the adverse situations their families face. Our school resources are limited also too, especially this year as federal Title I funding has dropped. I want to see my students engaged and excited about doing science and sense out of 7th grade core Science standards.
Unless science makes sense to students, they won't be able to connect to their lives and find relevance to themselves - funding for labs, hands-on activities, and quality resources can hep bridge that gap!
My Project
1st project
Students will build an inexpensive, safe, flying model of a rocket to learn the concept of Newton's 3rd law of Motion.
Rockets are governed by Newton's 3rd Laws of Motion which states that "every action has an equal and opposite reaction"
Material students will need are a meat tray, rubber band, to build their rocket.
As students build and launch their own rocket, they will connect Newton's concept into their own project and make sense out of it. This project will bring students more engaged in learning and excitement in science.
2nd project
The purpose of this project is: dissolving a solid mineral ( aluminum sulfate or Alum) into water solution and creating an environment that crystals will grow.
Materials we need are electric pot, food coloring and aluminum. Students will learn that in certain environment, minerals grow.
