My students enter First grade excited about all that they have already learned about the world and enthusiastic about all that they know they will learn as the year progresses. I want my fabulous first graders to stay as eager about coming to school each morning as they are on day one of the school year. I strive to motivate them to do their best throughout the year, and believe that creating a comfortable classroom that meets their needs is crucial.
My students are fun, hard-working, and tough little mountain children.
They might be from a ranching family that has been deeply embedded in the community for generations, or from a newly-arrived family from across the country that has recently chosen to adopt the mountain lifestyle. We have a very caring school community that I have watched grow ever stronger since I first became a part of it.
My Project
I want to give my students more options for active seating, allowing them to move productively as they work and also improve their attentive listening skills. Traditional classroom seating is rigid, static, and restrictive when it comes to allowing movement. All students can benefit from increased movement since physical activity helps boost oxygen to the brain, which is critical for maintaining alertness throughout the day. We need ergonomic chairs for more opportunities for active seating in our classroom.
These Zuma rocker chairs will provide students with a safe and non-disruptive way to meet their need for movement.
My ultimate goal is to provide a non-rigid seating option to every student in my class. This project will enable me to keep moving toward that goal, bringing our total of alternative seating options, as compared to traditional classroom chairs, to fourteen. I know that allowing students to move freely is vital when it comes to being able to focus on classroom work and lessons.
