Movement is good for the body and stimulates the mind. Many children struggle with attention and learning in the classroom. A young developing brain requires various types of motion to develop important foundational skills for learning.
My students come to my room with many challenges that begin outside my doors.
Our school is located in a high poverty area, so most students do not have the materials and support at home to aid in their success at school. My goal is to provide them with resources that they enjoy and need so they can improve their fine-motor skills and be successful in writing while at the same time building a strong foundation. They struggle with fine-motor and large motor skills such as holding a pencil, cutting with scissors, or throwing a ball. All of the students enjoy using hands-on activities to learn.
My Project
I have some extra wiggly friends who benefit from the use of non traditional seating. I am requesting a rocking chair to help provide gentle movement while not distracting others. The tactile tracing letters and numbers will help with fine motor skills and crossing the midline using one hand. Many students have difficulties with this task at a young age and it affects many of their developmental milestones.
We will spend a lot of time this school year working on letter recognition and letter sounds.
This project will help give my students extra tools to meet our goals that will carry them throughout their lives.
Some children may need more movement than their peers to help them organize their bodies for school work. The rhythmical sway of a rocking chair can have calming and organizing effects that will help a child to "settle in" and be ready to work.
