"Music produces a kind of pleasure in which human nature cannot do without," Plato once said and that is so very true in the elementary music classroom as well. My students are so enthusiastic about music and playing instruments yet have no guitars to call their very own in the classroom.
I am the sole music teacher in an elementary school grades K-5 with a student population of 855 in Southern Nevada.
My classes in grades 3, 4, and 5 are thrilled at the prospect of learning to play an instrument - especially the guitar! The students are all very passionate about their school and their love of music.
My Project
Having a classroom set of guitars would make my student's YEAR! We have a very large audition-based honor choir, the Heroes of Harmony, comprised of 130 fourth and fifth grade students, but they are looking for more. They are looking and yearning to actually hold, feel and be a part of an instrumental ensemble. They are all very passionate about music, life and learning and would love to have “music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul”. (Plato)
There is no doubt that music has a powerful effect of students both academically and socially.
Having these guitars in the classroom would foster their social skills by learning to work together as a cohesive ensemble while nurturing independence as students learn to practice on their own. I have no doubt that their math and reading skills skills will improve as they learn to keep time, read music and become composers as well.
