My Students

Think back to when you were in school. What do you remember? The pages you read, or the activities you did? Children are fascinated with rocks--their colors, their shapes, and their feel. Students with special needs require hands-on activities for optimal learning experiences.

My students have low-incidence disabilities, which means they are the 20% of students who have received special services since birth and/or have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities.

Furthermore, my students come from a high rate of poverty. Our school is 80% free and reduced lunches, with the students in my classroom being a slightly higher percentage.

My Project

My students must have age-appropriate curriculum, provided in a simpler way. Hands-on activities provide them with a much richer learning experience than watching a video and discussing or paper/pencil activities. We are studying Earth Science and need appropriate learning-based projects that address our state-mandated objectives, while still allowing us to learn at our own speed and in our own way.

My students need a classroom rock collection set and charts for rock classification.

Being able to hold and touch rock samples while learning about their classifications, and even more, to learn how to classify rocks themselves, would allow my students to have ample time to study the rocks and allow the repetition they need in order to retain information.
