Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a title I school with 100% of students on free or reduced lunch and free breakfast. Many of their homes provide little to no academic support but everyday they come to school with a smile on their face ready to learn. Each day they are excited and enthusiastic to see what learning adventures they will participate in. This year, my class is focusing on the modality of learning that best suits their personal needs. They have been super excited to sit on the variety of flexible seating in my classroom which includes ottomans, floor pillows, Ikea stools and balance discs. Their absolute favorite seats are the stools but I have noticed that they always try to rock back and forth on the stools. My current stools do not meet these needs nor are they very durable. The class would be so thrilled to sit, rock, wobble and lean on the durable wiggle active stools when they are reading, engaged in math lessons or writing a story to publish.
My Project
Research shows that children need to move especially during the school day.
Active seating that allows students to wobble and rock also increases oxygen flow to the brain and core strength.
In addition, it keeps young minds more alert and focused. Physical activity in the classroom is also linked to higher academic performance, better health and improved behavior. Comfortable students are engaged students.
FlexibIe seating encourages students to find their best seat to stay calm, focused and productive. I have already seen the positive impact of my flexible seating in the classroom and truly hope to have a bigger impact with these additional seats and balance discs.
