Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the sweetest souls you will ever meet! They have been lucky to grow up in a community that values family and culture. The students have attended the district since pre-K and have fostered a strong bond with one another. Our school district considers itself a family. We have small schools, so we do a ton of community and team building with our kids K-12. It is apparent they really care and look out for one another.
I am lucky enough to teach English and nutrition!
I get to share my passion for reading and health with my students every year. It is so important, in this era, to get kids to fall in love with reading again. I work tirelessly to spark my students inherent curiosity and get them to understand the beauty and relevance for reading the classics and then tie major themes to contemporary works. Nutrition class, I would argue, is just as important as teaching literature. With diabetes at an all time high, we need to act now and teach our youth how to nourish their bodies and fight this terrible epidemic.
My Project
I have been wanting to take my nutrition class on a field trip since the beginning of the year, but get bogged down by transportation and activity costs. The community I work with does not have the resources to pay for these expensive extracurricular activities.
This donation will help teach the students the importance of working as a team, and as a bonus they learn how to rock climb!!
Vertex Climbing Center is hosting us at their indoor rock climbing facility. Their staff will be sharing their expertise with us and will be teaching us how to belay and rock climb.
None of the students have had this experience before but they all are so excited to step out of their comfort zone and learn how to climb. Field trips are such an important aspect of learning but sadly, our public schools do not have resources to make these adventures happen. It is because of community members like you that our schools continue to thrive!
