My students love to learn despite their poverty level, as well as physical and academic disabilities. Most of them have Autism or other cognitive disabilities but that has not stopped them from reaching goals and proving that they can read and learn.
Our rural community consists of many low income households but also many dedicated parents who want the best for their children.
Parents partner with our school through PTO and other events, but the classrooms often lack the supplies needed for projects. It is left to the teachers to fund them.
Our school is the only green school in the state, and we take great pride in that. Our students have respect for teachers, peers and themselves. When people walk into our building, they are guaranteed to be greeted by many smiles.
My Project
Rocking chairs have soothed babies for years, and my students need this same feel of comfort in the classroom. The class will be able to read in the chair as well as sit in it when a cool down is needed.
Students in my class enjoy sensory stimulation and a rocking chair will provide that.
Autistic kids are comforted by movement and rhythm. The chair will allow them to use their legs to create their own movement and rhythm.
Adults will sit in the rocking chair to rock students if extra comfort is needed as well as to read to a group of students who need the the visual movement to sit and listen.
