My bilingual students are 5 and 6 years old and full of energy! They arrive in kindergarten with big open eyes looking everywhere around them, full of curiosity , and determination. Some of them have never been in school before and their world is overflowing with things inviting them to come and explore.
Moving ,touching and exploring is how 5 and 6 years old learn the best.
Today kindergarten curriculum is so heavy in academics and rigor, I constantly ask myself how can I make sure that my students have the best environment to be successful and at the same time have the opportunity to keep moving and learning. In order to do that, I use different teaching strategies and modalities such small group, blended learning, and team work.
Our school is a Title I school, where the majority of our children qualify for free and reduced lunch. I want to provide them with the opportunity to learn, explore and discover the wonders ahead of them.
What an amazing adventure it is to be in Kindergarten! There is so much to learn and discover and their little bodies are not made to be STILL. Giving them the opportunity to move from large group sitting in the carpet, to small group sitting in chairs to independent work sitting in the floor helps my student some but you can see very soon after transition that it was not enough movement for them.
Flexible sitting will provide the movement they need while reading and writing keeping them on task and minimizing disruptions.
The Wooble and Ball chairs and rolling stool will give them the movement they need. The students can make a choice on where to sit and it will also teach them to be a self determined learner.
I have seen the difference flexible sitting has made in other classrooms, and I want my students to experience the best learning environment!
