My students need 7 exercise balls to sit on instead of chairs.

Rock, Roll and Read! Move your body while you learn! That's how we do it in my 5th grade classroom.
Many students (and adults) have difficulty sitting still for extended periods of time. Students in my room can choose to sit on an exercise ball instead of a chair. This allows them to rock, roll, swivel, and sit in a variety of positions that standard classroom chairs do not. While the "ball chair" is especially helpful for those "wiggly" students, many student just enjoy the option to sit in a different way. Because I do not have enough for every student, we utilize a rotation system for sharing the balls amongst all students who like to use them.
Through a grant I received in 2005, I purchased 6 heavy-duty, professional exercise balls. In addition, I have purchased 6 "home" exercise balls. Each year, 1 or 2 of the "home" exercise balls are punctured. I need to purchase more of the heavy-duty balls which can withstand the pressures of classroom life. Having more balls means more opportunities and choices for students.
I am convinced that being able to move around while learning is essential for some learners - myself included! You can make moving while learning a possibility for students in my room.
