My students come from different socio-economic backgrounds. Several speak languages other than English as their first language. Some of them have one or more adverse childhood experiences that are impacting their lives. Nevertheless, my students are an energetic community hungry for knowledge and learning. They are itching to learn new subjects and skills. My students are learning about the world around them and how they fit into it and they love being scientists in their own right.
My students come from an ethnically and culturally diverse urban city and attend a low-income school in Washington State.
My Project
Our classroom library is geared toward beginning readers who are learning how to decode. I have slowly created a classroom library to meet the needs of these readers.
We need books for students who are reading for understanding.
These books need to be more reflective of our classroom and or our school. I want my students to celebrate their similarities instead of focusing primarily on their differences. Our class also needs to develop a sense of respect and acceptance for those who look, act, and sound different from themselves.
We also need Whisper Phones so that when I am meeting with small groups of students, they can hear themselves reading without getting distracted by their neighbors.
