Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 12 students in my classroom with a wide range of abilities, needs, and concerns this school year. My students are in a low income/high poverty school in which 84.4% of the students receive free or reduced-price meals. Our school is high poverty and many students cannot afford a whole lot.
Families send their precious children to our class every day for us to help them take those first steps towards accomplishing great feats.
Despite some of the challenges they face in and around their environment, every year my students come to school excited, full of life and eager to learn.
Children make this room their home for however long they stay and miss it dearly when they move on. It's something we take pride in and hope to continue doing what we love to do and that nurtures their love for learning.
No matter who enters through my classroom doors, they are part of our school family. I hope to provide them with the absolute best education we can offer.
My Project
Many kids are fascinated with robots. With so many kinds of media showing off their awesomeness, it's impossible not to be interested in robots and how they work. However, it is necessary that kids learn the importance of a robot's purpose in our daily lives.
There's a big interest in robots that have cool weapons, can turn into cars, and have things that go boom, but those are not practical bots.
I want my students to explore and learn the purpose of robots. I have requested an iRobot - Roomba 690 App-Controlled Robot Vacuum - Black/Silver vacuum cleaner to show our kids a real robot that serves a purpose. They will analyze the cleaning droid and make observations of its behavior. The Roomba vacuum will inspire our kids to look into and think about robots that help make life better.
The second part of the project requests robotics kits. Our kids will brainstorm ways robots can make life better, design them, and bring their ideas to life.
Our students will assemble the robots and make the necessary modifications that will make the robot useful to our classroom, school, home, and hopefully, the world.
