We are a k-5 elementary school in Western Massachusetts servicing approximately 325 low-middle income students.
Our students get excited with hands-on, active and engaging projects that challenge them and allow them to think outside the box to find solutions on their own.
They come to school each day ready to give their best and try new things in order to grow both personally and academically. Technology is the bridge for them that keeps the excitement in learning.
Since so few of our students have access to technology outside of school due to their social-economic environments, the school computer lab and classroom are the only places they have to experiment and work with higher end technology and programming. Tinkering with and utilizing current technology trends allows them some control of their learning environment and also allows them to feel in control of at least a portion of their lives which they otherwise might not have.
My Project
Our students love hands-on, engaging activities. They are currently learning computer coding but we are looking to take it up a notch and include a STEM challenge using coding and robots.
Our students will be so excited to program the robots, furthering their knowledge of code while also being able to see their coding in action.
Whether it be racing them, making them dance or running them through an obstacle course, the critical thinking and logical step-by-step coding process helps them to think in a more independent manner than that used in their usual classroom instruction. This elevates their structured learning process from textbook learning to an exciting hands-on activity with an independent thinking process.
The students will feel that they have an active role in their learning process by deciding as a group what they want the robot to accomplish all while having fun learning how to make it happen.
