Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
While my students vary in culture, they are similar in that they are all from low-income backgrounds. They all have a desire to learn, to improve their skills and knowledge, and succeed not just in school but in their professional lives.
My students vary in ability as well as culture and show up every day despite blizzards, hurricanes, train delays and home lives that are less than ideal.
They come to learn, to get food, and some of them come just to find people who give them attention and care for them. I have special education students, English language learners, honor students, and general education students.
They inspire me to teach them and help them improve both their education and their lives, and I hope that I can live up to the difficult job that is education.
My Project
I am a science teacher, and I want to introduce technology and coding to my 7th graders. My students are almost all from low income backgrounds, and have little or no opportunity to work with the technology that can prepare them for the challenges of the future.
I am introducing students for the first time to actual computer science in the form of computer coding that I incorporate into my science curriculum.
I believe that robotics is a concrete way for them to understand programming concepts while improving their critical thinking skills. Offering coding and robotics will help them acquire skills that they can use to achieve success, and will allow me to reach students in a way that might motivate those who are beyond the reach of traditional teaching. Since three quarters of my students are English language learners, I need the graphical block coding platform that the EV3 has to reach all of these students.
I would like to add to my few previously funded sets of Lego Mindstorm EV3's since I have 120 students to whom I would like to teach robotics and coding. I feel that another set would facilitate wider participation. I am learning robotics along with my students, and am amazed at how quickly they have picked up on the robotics programming skills, transcending their limited English ability. I am looking forward to increasing my knowledge as well as theirs, and taking the journey with them.
