Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The technology program here at our school was unfortunately shut down three years ago due to funding. We are starting the program back up from scratch but unfortunately a lot of the material was lost when the program went under and we are currently not funded by the school.
The students I work with come from tough backgrounds.
100% of the students get government funded breakfast and lunch. We have recently received over 50 students from the current Puerto Rico hurricane crisis and over 80% of our population is Puerto Rican/Hispanic, the other 15% is African American and the last 5% is Asian and Caucasian. My students are very eager to learn about all the different technologies that are around today. My goal is to inspire students who come from tough backgrounds and prove to them that they can succeed and get great jobs in the technology field and help get them out of the tough situations they come from. If we can spark an interest in a student about any technology then we may be able to save a child from turning down the wrong path.
My Project
We will be using the Sphero robots to help teach the kids about coding. For the first time they will be able to write in lines of code. The great thing about the Sphero robots is that they come with a free educational software that we can use to teach the kids how to code in a fun a engaging way!
Our school has received 30 plus students from Hurricane Maria.
There have been challenges for these students in the classroom and the language barrier is a big one. One of the beauties with coding is that it can be put into Spanish so these students can read and understand what we are doing in class which helps eliminate the language barrier and keeps the students involved and engaged in class.
With a class set of robots, each student will be able to fully engage in the experience instead of having 3 or 4 kids per robot. A class set would mean there would be a one on one learning experience for all the kids for all 3 years they are in middle school!
The Sphero robots are a great and engaging way to turn kids on to coding and introduce them to something new and exciting that they have not seen before in their educational careers.
